The Cow and Calf Rocks, also known as Hangingstone Rocks, are a huge rock formation high on Ilkley Moor that consists of an outcrop and a boulder.
The rocks are formed of millstone grit, a kind of sandstone, and are named after a large one and a smaller one that sit next to it, like a cow and calf.
According to local mythology, the Calf was separated from the Cow as the giant Rombald fled an adversary and stomped on the rock as he leaped over the valley.
It is said that his adversary was his enraged wife.
She threw the stones she was carrying in her skirt to create the local rock formation The Skirtful of Stones.
